We decided to disguise it! It was by far the cheapest way to go. And the easiest with respect to tearing down the shelf, patching, sanding, and painting holes, just to rehang more shelves. We measured the width and the depth of the top of the shelf and bought a piece of wood to fit it (we only had to cut off a few inches of the piece we got). This board sits on top of the shelf. Then we got a 4 inch piece of wood that was the same length to attach to the edge and hide the metal lip of the shelf.
With just a little wood glue and some nails we created a shelf topped that would just slide on top of the existing shelf.
I added a little wood filler before sanding.
I then sanded the area where the two boards met until it was smooth.
We thought we had a huge 5+ gallon container of our trim paint in our attic that the builder left for us. After getting all 3 of the containers we had down, it turns out we had 1 container for our wall color and 2 containers of our ceiling color. Who needs that much ceiling paint?? Oh well, after a quick trip we had a small container of white paint that we slapped on.
Although it was a really heavy shelf, I actually lifted it up there by myself. I should have waited the 15 minutes for Alan to get home from work and help me. But I just couldn't wait to see the result.
What a huge improvement!! Gah, I am just in love. Next up is some sass for the wall!
I was hoping you'd make a "cover" for the shelf! Great solution. I can't wait to see how the rest of it turns out!
ReplyDeleteGenius! It looks so much better!
